Smoke & Stories from the Hudson Valley

The Hudson Valley is where New York’s whiskey roots dig deep—rolling hills, crisp air, and distilleries that feel as much a part of the land as the orchards around them. Our travels this week took us not only to those distilleries, but also to the hauntingly beautiful Bannerman Island, with its crumbling castle rising from the river like a ghost of another age.

The trip began with a boat ride down the Hudson, the water smooth and silver under the autumn sky. Our captain wasn’t just steering—he was storytelling, weaving Revolutionary War history into the current like it belonged there. We drifted past Washington’s last military post, the very place where he stood firm when others urged him to become king. Hearing those stories while the river carried us forward gave the ride a weight that was more than scenic—it felt like floating through a living timeline.

When we arrived, Bannerman greeted us with a friendly tour guide and an imposing 72-step staircase. We tackled the climb with gusto, and it proved far less punishing than it looked. What was punishing, however, was trying to hear the guide over a pair of unruly children running wild while their parents looked the other way. To top it off, one woman announced two stops later that she “didn’t come for a history lesson—just to see the flowers.” It was one of the rudest displays I’ve seen on the road. Thankfully, they soon wandered off, and with them went the distraction. The rest of the tour unfolded in peace—castle walls, river views, and stories that felt stitched into the stone itself.

What stuck with me most was the tale of the powder magazine explosion, the blast that left the fortress in ruin. The shattered walls and jagged edges looked less like a riverside armory and more like something out of 1940 London—scarred, stubborn, and strangely beautiful.

🔥 Tip of the Week

When you’re traveling and cooking outdoors, always pack a small cast-iron skillet. From searing fresh-caught fish to toasting bread over an open flame, it’s the one tool that turns a roadside pull-off into a camp kitchen.

And remember: just because you were taught how to behave in public, that doesn’t mean everyone else has been.

🛠️ Weekly Recommendation

Mixing Glass – Nothing beats it for stirring up an Old Fashioned or Manhattan. The weight feels right in the hand, and it’s the secret weapon for turning campsite whiskey into a proper cocktail.
